Biography

Deboragh Gabler was born in Toronto and is a graduate of the University of Toronto. She started her career in film as a documentary filmmaker, successfully completing five award-winning films. Deboragh continues to take film courses at Simon Fraser University, accounting and finance courses at UBC and is currently enrolled in the MBA business course at AIB.

Deboragh has worked in various production capacities over her career, including assistant director, production manager, line producer and producer. She has production managed, line produced and produced over 50 feature films, TV movies and series in Canada and the US. The films that Deboragh has produced have garnered five Emmys, a Peabody award, Prism Award, Epiphany Award, DGA award and numerous festival awards.   As well as her extensive experience in film and TV, Deboragh carried out three important corporate roles in film and television. She was a Financial Analyst at Telefilm Canada, overseeing Telefilm’s film investments across Canada. She also founded and managed ACFC West (a film technicians’ union) as Business Agent, securing over $500M in film production budgets, recruiting and training ACFC’s 3,000 members and permittees. As Executive Director of BC Motion Picture Association, Deboragh instituted the Leo Awards, now an annual celebration of the accomplishments of the film and television industry in BC.

Deboragh has served as Board Member of the Motion Picture Association, the Academy of Cinema and Television and is a member of the Canadian Motion Picture Association and the Directors Guild. She is a Lifetime Member of Women in Film and Television, where she was on the Executive Board for four years. Her company, Legacy Filmworks Ltd. sponsored the Legacy Awards annually for ten years in support of filmmakers in the International Women’s Film Festival. She was awarded “Woman of the Year” award in 2008 and is an active member of the film community in Vancouver, Toronto and Los Angeles.

Deboragh is passionate about supporting heart, stroke, cancer and philanthropic charities. She participates in many volunteer and fund-raising activities. Deboragh lives in Vancouver and Los Angeles with her children, Steven (13) and David (9).
